Discussing and promoting contemporary art
In 1965, on the occasion of the 85th birthday of its honorary citizen Hans Purrmann, the City of Speyer established the “Hans Purrmann Prize of the City of Speyer for Visual Arts” (sponsorship award). This sponsorship award, endowed with 6,000 euros, was joined in 2012 by the “Great Hans Purrmann Prize of the City of Speyer”, endowed with 20,000 euros.
Since 2017, both prizes are funded by the Hans Purrmann Foundation. In addition to the prize money, each prize winner will receive their own publication. The selection and organisation of the jury for the “Great Hans Purrmann Prize of the City of Speyer” falls within the remit of the Foundation.
The conception of the prizes is based on the self-image and life dynamics of its namesake: passionate drive, a high willingness to take risks, the courage to experiment, openness, clarity and power in colour and form. All these are outstanding characteristics to be translated into works of art of any media and genre in the present.
